Highlights
► We examined the road safety impact of a modal shift from short car trips to cycling. ► Transferring short trips made by cars to bicycles does not change the number of fatalities. ► The number of serious injuries increases, mainly due to more single-bicycle crashes. ► The road safety outcomes improve if only car trips of youngsters are replaced and worsen if trips of elderly are replaced.
