He is board-certified in both occupational medicine and internal medicine. He is Head of the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health at The University of Iowa College of Public Health, and has a secondary appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine at The University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Since 1995 he has directed the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center. His research work has been in the areas of injury epidemiology and occupational injuries, including development of an automated hospital emergency room injury surveillance database for the state of Iowa, and studies of the relation between environmental factors and injuries among farmers, older workers and construction workers. He recently served on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Injury Prevention and Control and currently serves on the Institute of Medicine Committee on the Health and Safety Needs of Older Workers.
