Emergency Department Visits from a Local Amusement Park
2011, Journal of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :Available data indicate that roller coasters account for 26% of injuries on amusement rides at fixed sites (permanently affixed to a site, such as an amusement park or theme park, as compared to mobile rides that are moved from site to site, such as with fairs or carnivals) (2). There have been several published case reports linking roller coaster rides with neurologic complications, including subdural hematomas, internal carotid artery and vertebral artery dissections, subarachnoid and intraparenchymal hemorrhages, carotid artery thrombosis with stroke, and spinal injuries (3–15). Roller coaster and other amusement park rides also have been associated with pneumothorax, dislocated intraocular lens, partial hepatic amputation, corneal foreign body, and peritoneal dialysis catheter displacement (16–20).
Subacute subdural hematoma in a 45-year-old woman with no significant past medical history after a roller coaster ride
2009, American Journal of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :However, there have not been many reported cases of SDH after a roller coaster ride or “roller coaster headache” in an otherwise healthy adult with no other medical problems. There have been 7 reported cases of SDH after a roller coaster ride [3-8]. This is a case of a 45-year-old right-handed woman who was transferred to our institution from a local outside hospital with a 2-day history of right occipital headache, worsening left foot drop, and nausea.
