AB  - In Poland there is a low level of safety on roads against other European Union countries. The aim of the study carried out in 2015 was to learn what percentage of drivers use mobile phones while driving a vehicle in Poland and if it increased comparing to previous years.The study was conducted by Motor Transport Institute and Heller Consult, commissioned by Secretary of National Road Safety Council in Poland in all 16 Polish voivodships. In each voivodship an external observation method was used on different road categories, in urban and nonurban areas and in voivodship capitals. To register the data, special mobile application was utilized. Data on 160 808 passenger cars’ drivers and 40 107 drivers of other vehicles was collected.Among the observed drivers, 5 057 (3,1%) used mobiles while driving. The mobiles were more often used by women (3,4%) than men (3%). The largest group of drivers who used mobiles were in age group 25–60 (3,3%), the lowest mobile phone use rate was observed in the group of 61+ (1%).Slightly higher rate of mobile phone use was noted among passenger cars’ drivers in nonurban areas (3,2%) than in urban (3,1%). The passenger cars’ drivers most often used mobiles on express roads (4,5%), least often on voivodship roads (3%). Among the observed users, 1 885 other than passenger cars’ drivers (4,7%) used mobiles during their trips. The majority of mobile phones users were observed among lorry drivers (5,6%) and delivery cars drivers (5,3%). Motorcyclists who used mobiles were only 0,1% and cyclists – 0,8%.The study on the mobile phones use by drivers in Poland shows that the problem is not very significant. However, the relatively high mobile use rates among lorry and delivery cars drivers as well as among drivers on express roads should be monitored.
