Abstract
Background Traffic crashes is the No. 2 death cause among children in China. Child pedestrians are the major victims. Most traffic crashes caused while children crossing the streets. Improving child behavior on safe walking and school zone safety are the key for child pedestrian safety. Safe Kids China started the community school-based programs on students’ walking behavior improvement and school-zone modification to call for evidence-and issue-solving oriented measures for child pedestrian safety.
Objective Improve child pedestrian safety with focusing on changing unsafe behaviors and school zone
Methods 1) Questionnaire survey among students and parents on pedestrian issues and observation survey on school zone; 2) Develop curriculum for the schoolteachers based on issues found in the survey to educate students on safe behavior; 3) Modification of the school zone; 4) Evaluation of the education; 5) Promoting the project and encouraging more schools to join in.
Outcomes and Implications Five walking behaviors were founded as issues for improvements and four school zone issues were modified. The project is well used as lobbying materials for the local decision makers of school road safety education and the school zone safety modification. Now more schools in the community are using the developed educational curriculum and school zone improvement.
Conclusion Up to now, over twenty schools have been using the developed educational curriculum; one school zone modification has done. The project is a polite and will engage more schools working on child pedestrians with issue-solving focused and improving school zone safety.
