486 Implementation of district road traffic injury (D-RTI) prevention measures in Wang Chao District, Tak Province

Abstract

In Wang Chao District, road safety operations are overseen by the District Quality of Life Development Committee in collaboration with local mechanisms. These initiatives operate within the district’s framework. Hence, it’s crucial to persistently and seriously pursue these endeavors aimed at preventive measures to minimize injuries and fatalities arising from road accidents. In 2022, Wang Chao District witnessed 381 incidents resulting in injuries to 455 individuals and 7 fatalities . Despite continuous efforts to implement road safety measures, the issue of road accidents persists. Therefore, it’s imperative to sustain and earnestly advance the execution of measures aimed at preventing injuries from road accidents. This involves developing operational mechanisms at the sub-district level, fostering community engagement, and promoting participation within district and local networks. These collective efforts aim to cultivate a safety-conscious culture regarding road usage within the community, ensuring continuous community involvement in accident prevention initiatives.

Methods The operational approach within community groups in Wang Chao District involves assembling a task force to identify issues, comprehend the community’s requirements, and formulate strategies to tackle road accidents in the area.

Study Design The structure employed in community engagement follows the Results-Based Management framework, utilizing a series of five tools

Operational steps: Community Preparation, Establishing Community Engagement, Implementing Problem Resolution, Results Observation via Guidance and Results Reflection

Results In 2023 revealed 582 injuries and 6 fatalities. The most affected age group each year is typically the adolescent range of 15–19 years old. The increase in injuries is linked to the heightened use of roads by individuals. Risky behaviors identified encompass not wearing helmets, accounting for 325 cases (75.58%) failure to use seat belts, accounting for 40 cases (39.6%) and driving under the influence, amounting to 61 cases (12.71%). Regarding problem selection in Wang Chao District, information was presented from various sectors during the Committee for the Development of District Quality of Life meeting, chaired by the district chief. The committee compiled issues into three categories: Health, Social and Environmental aspects, and Economic aspects. These issues were subsequently summarized to collaboratively devise solutions, Include: Drinking and driving, Not wearing helmets, and Reckless driving
