Seatbelts has been a strong augmenting factor in reducing road crash injuries and fatalities. Through the use of economic analysis of the laws, the effectivity of seatbelts as a secondary safety measure is examined through the lens of enforcement and its corollary socio-economic effects. The paper takes a theoretical perspective of seatbelt legislation in the Philippines in the context of the economic cost of its compliance, the effectivity of its implementation and enforcement. In this lens, regulatory recommendations shall be presented through the ordinary command and control regulation combined with behavioral ‘nudge’ theories.
