Canadian injury prevention organisations to merge
After years of discussion, Safe Kids Canada, Safe Communities Canada, SMARTRISK and ThinkFirst Canada have decided to merge. The new organisation will have a new brand that combines the best of each of the players. Until a new brand and name is chosen, the new organisation will be referred to as ‘One Voice NewCo’. It aims to be a national organisation whose vision is to be THE strategic injury prevention partner for government, the health system, researchers, business, communities and families. Its mandate will encompass all ages and both intentional and unintentional injuries. The search is underway for a CEO and it is anticipated that the new organisation will largely be staffed by the four founding organisations. The idea behind the merger represents a significant change but it is one that positions injury-prevention efforts in the best way possible to achieve success.
Tragic Belgian bus crash
A bus carrying 52 Belgian children returning from a ski trip crashed into the wall of a tunnel, killing 22. It is not yet clear how this might have been prevented but initially there were questions about how rested the drivers were. Later, an AFP report suggested a teacher may have distracted the driver by handing him a DVD film to play.
US congressional briefing on injury prevention
Last March, a group of injury prevention organisations met with members of Congress and briefed them on injury and violence prevention.
