Suicide and hospitalization for mental disorders in Sweden: A population-based case-control study
2010, Journal of Psychiatric ResearchCitation Excerpt :During the time period of this study, the number of psychiatric hospital beds were reduced by more than 50% in Sweden, making the possibility for inpatient treatment of mental disorders more limited (Priebe et al., 2005). During the same time period, the annual number of suicides decreased in Sweden like in several other European countries (Gunnell and Middleton, 2003; Isacsson, 2000; Mittendorfer-Rutz and Wasserman, 2004; Pirkola et al., 2007; Qin et al., 2006). In this study, the decrease in available psychiatric beds was likely to have contributed to the decreasing yearly proportion of the control population who had received an inpatient diagnosis of a mental disorder.
