Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) are commonly experienced after motor vehicle collisions (MVC) (Schelp and Ekman, 1990), with an annual incidence of approximately 600 per 100,000 persons (Cassidy et al., 2000). While WAD is typically labelled as a neck injury, isolated neck pain after traffic injury is extremely rare; thus, WAD is best acknowledged as a syndrome that extends well beyond the neck and head region (Ferrari et al., 2005; Hincapie et al., 2010).

Conversely, the results are the opposite of those reported in high-income countries where considerable weaknesses in police reporting of traffic injuries have been demonstrated (Barancik and Fife, 1985; Agran et al., 1990; Schelp and Ekman, 1990; Rosman and Knuiman, 1994). This can be explained by substantial differences in terms of the quality of medical care and registers in both low- and high-income countries.
