Some applied new data collected by new technologies, such as video recording devices (Sayed et al., 2013; Guo et al., 2019b), a combination of the existing data and other sources, such as a hospital-recorded data (Larsen and Hardt-Madsen, 1988; Weiss, 1992; Scuffham and Langley, 1997), and other methods, such as interview and survey of the crash-involved person (Langley et al., 2000; Lin et al., 2003; Bjørnskau et al., 2012). Of these, new technologies, such as video recording devices, have enabled the collection of crash information on all crash scenes from pre-crash to post-crash, crash speed, crash time, crash location (or trajectories), vehicle control status, and crash-involved vehicle maneuvers (Chung and Chang, 2015).

2013, Accident Analysis and PreventionCitation Excerpt :To date, there has been ongoing debate regarding the effectiveness of cycling helmets in preventing head injuries (Curnow, 2003; Thompson et al., 1999; Walter et al., 2011). Prior studies that have examined this issue have been population-based cohorts (Povey et al., 1999; Scuffham and Langley, 1997; Scuffham et al., 2000; Tin Tin et al., 2010; Walter et al., 2011) and case–control studies (Amoros et al., 2012; Hansen et al., 2003; Heng et al., 2006; Maimaris et al., 1994; McDermott et al., 1993; Spaite et al., 1991; Thomas et al., 1994; Thompson et al., 1989, 1996). While the case–control studies have typically shown that helmets reduce the odds of head injury to some extent, they have had conflicting findings as to the magnitude of the reduction experienced.

Although helmets are effective for all bicyclists, regardless of age, helmets are not always properly used, e.g. worn in a poor position on the head, so helmet design can possibly be improved to reduce improper use (Curnow, 2003; Scuffham and Langley, 1997; Robinson, 2001; Ching et al., 1997). Helmet usage is related with other factors: for example, helmet usage rates were in one study found related with the time spent riding a bicycle each year (Rodgers, 2000), another study found those who wear helmets are more highly educated (Wasserman et al., 1988), and yet another study found helmet use in rural areas to be lower than in urban areas across all age groups and for both genders (Harlos et al., 1999).
