2015, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Also, as alcohol availability in the home was differentially predictive of alcohol use by females, parent training and community-based interventions may be particularly important interventions for prevention in girls. There is a long-standing literature on how parental investment, parent-adolescent communication, and parental monitoring help prevent or reduce substance abuse (e.g., Dryfoos, 1991), and our findings indicate that this may be particularly impactful for females. We note several limitations for the study.
