2022, Small Animal Critical Care MedicineEpidemiological aspects of drowning and non-fatal drowning in the waters of Amsterdam
2018, Journal of Forensic and Legal MedicineCitation Excerpt :A clear explanation for this high percentage is not provided by previous studies. It is most likely due to more risky behaviour in general in combination with alcohol and/or drug usage.12,13 One recent study concludes that several factors contribute to high drowning rates in men such as elevated risks for exposure, risk taking, alcohol use, and interaction between overestimation of abilities combined with heavy alcohol use.14
A record linkage study on former police detainees who died in Amsterdam between 2013 and 2015
2018, Journal of Forensic and Legal MedicineCitation Excerpt :When reviewing the cases of former police detainees who drowned, there seemed to be a high coincidence with a history of substance abuse. This association is also found by other studies.28,29 Although previous studies did show higher number of suicide deaths in ex-prisoners and law offenders when compared to the general population,16,18,21,25 we found no difference in number of suicides between our groups.
Alcohol and its contributory role in fatal drowning in Australian rivers, 2002–2012
2017, Accident Analysis and PreventionCitation Excerpt :Prevention strategies should also highlight the dangers of recreating in and around water alone whilst under the influence of alcohol. There is a lack of consensus among researchers as to a risky level of alcohol and how to determine its contributory role in a drowning (Howland and Hingson, 1988). Research conducted into the role of alcohol and drowning as a result of recreational swimming has examined cases that range from “under the influence’ or where alcohol was ‘mentioned as a cause’ to reported BACs of 0.05%, 0.08% and 0.10% (Driscoll et al., 2004a).
