| Children work in groups to of 2 or 3 to develop 5 minute ‘infomercials’ to present a safety message to the class. Class discusses the safety messages, why they are important and whether children are convinced to take action. |
Know how to escape from a fire | •If there is a fire in the home follow the safety rules: |
| •Get out of the home |
| •Get the fire brigade out—dial 999 using a phone outside the house |
| •Stay out—don’t go back for anything, wait for a trained fire fighter |
| •If you have to escape through smoke, stay low and crawl under smoke |
| •If smoke blocks your exit, close the door and cover all cracks to stop smoke entering |
| •Involve every household member in designing a home escape plan |
| •Have a grown up install smoke detectors on every floor of the home and remind them to test them monthly |
| •Locate two escape routes from each room |
Learn and practice outdoor fire safety | •Adults should light and supervise all outdoor cooking fires |
| •Keep fires at least 4.5 metres away from the home |
| •Always keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish the fire |
| •Always leave fireworks to professionals |
| •Always wear gloves when using sparklers and put them hot end down into a bucket of sand or water |
| •Never climb electricity towers or poles |
Learn and practice cooking safety | •Children should only cook when supervised by an adult |
| •Keep young children out of the kitchen when older family members are cooking |
| •Turn pot handles towards the back of the cooker |
| •Learn stop, drop, roll, cool and call |
