*Definitions of “mass shooting” and “mass homicide” have ranged from 3 to 5 victims killed.28,29 To exclude most of the more common firearm-related spousal and family violence killings, “mass shooting” is defined here as one in which ⩾5 firearm-related homicides are committed by one or two perpetrators in proximate events in a civilian setting, not counting any perpetrators killed by their own hand or otherwise.
Details of each case were collected from police and coroners’ files, by personal communication with police and counsel involved, or as a last resort from corroborating newspaper reports.
