Average annualized estimates and standard errors of the number of injury episodes reported by weeks elapsed between injury and interview, NHIS, 1997–99

Weeks in time periodNumber of periods in yearAverage 1997–99*
In time period (thousands)Annualized estimate (thousands)SE‡ (thousands)
*The averages across the three years of the weighted number of episodes reported in the time period, the annualized estimate for the time period, and the standard error (SE) of the annualized estimate for the time period are shown. The SE reflects the variability due to imputation via the multiple imputation analysis.
†Some episodes had 14–17 weeks between injury and interview. For purposes of annualizing the estimate, the number of weeks was assumed to be 13 based on the recall reference period of three months used in the question screening for injury episodes.
‡The standard errors for the annualized estimates of the number of injuries shown here should not be used to determine if the annualized estimates are statistically significantly different from one another, because the annualized estimates are cumulative and thus highly correlated. More appropriate techniques, along with results, are discussed in the Results section.
